Court Says Forcing Student to Write “I’m a Retard” 100 Times Not Abuse
A teacher in Italy who forced a student to write “I’m a retard” 100 times, has been acquitted of abuse charges. Apparently it would only have been abuse if it wasn’t true or the student had been forced to write it more than 100 times.
The teacher punished the 12-year old boy after he stopped another child from using the restroom and taunted him by calling him ‘gay’ and ‘girly’. Causing another boy to pee his pants seems more gay than retarded to me, but maybe the teacher thought writing “I’m gay” 100 times wouldn’t have been as effective because it didn’t have enough letters.
The student’s parents sued the school for 25,000 euros ($33,580) and the public prosecutor had called for a two month prison sentence, but the court dropped the case.
The teacher claimed that she had not intended to humiliate the student and just wanted to make a point because of a recent case where a student had committed suicide after being taunted about being gay. In Italian, the boy was told to write, “Io sono deficiente”, which literally means ‘deficient’, although the term is commonly used to mean ‘moron’ or retard’.
Whatever happened to the good old days when kids had to write something 1000 times while wearing a ‘dunce’ cap and got paddled when they finished? Those were the days when you could walk into a McDonald’s and the punk behind the counter was actually polite.

So wait - 25,000 euros equals $33,580? No wonder Bossy can’t afford a trip to Europe.

LOL. I am the one behind the counter at McDonalds.
I love this punishment. Maybe teach could of had punk write, ‘I like to pee in my pants’ instead.
Paddling, forced work, etc… I miss it. The retard comment is what sunk the boat for this teacher. Should of had him copy out of the dictionary. If you can argue that it is beneficial to the parent on an education level they usually don’t sue.

I’m amazed..as somebody who has lived in Italy, I’m astonshed the case got to court. You’d usually expect the boys parents to have been bought off long before that!

I think that is awesome. First off… retard jokes get me every time. Secondly… the kid deserved it.

If the kid actually had to write something like “I’m a retard”, I think that’s a poor decision on the part of the teacher. Although maybe you want to let the kid know that his behavior wasn’t acceptable, using a derogatory word seems counterproductive. The word ‘retard’ (as a noun) should be dropped from any decent vocabulary, because it is an insult that offends. It makes fun of those who have a disability.
The Italian word may perhaps not have this same meaning. I could see, for example, having the kid write the equivalent of “I am a knucklehead”…

It might not have been the most tasteful punishment possible, but do you think that kid will causing anymore pants-peeing any time soon? I think not.

In Italy it’s more offensive to call someone a fag, than to call someone a moron.
As for the parents: teach your son some manners, instead of having him run around the school bullying his fellow students. I had kids like that in my class. Now the likes of them wash my car.
@Bossy: yeah, the euro is pretty expensive for Americans. That’s why I like shopping over the internet and order all my stuff from the U.S.
