A couple in India hanged themselves yesterday when the grief over the death of their dog became too much for them to bear.

Police say that 67 year-old C.N. Madanraj and his wife, Tarabai, 63, hosted a burial feast for friends and later hanged themselves in their bedroom. The friends reported that the 13 year-old dog, named Puppy, was tender and delicious. Okay, I made that last part up, he wasn’t that delicious, because they used too much curry.

The really sad part of the story is that according to their Hindu religion, Mr. and Mrs. Madanraj have taken a serious step backward in their spiritual progress and will now be a few lives behind on their evolutionary journey.

According to Hindu belief, a person who commits suicide remains in earth consciousness as a bad spirit and wanders aimlessly until he reaches the end of his alloted life time. Then he goes to hell for a while to suffer even more and ultimately returns to earth to complete his previous karma from where he left off.

By the time the couple finish wandering and suffering, the spirit of their dog will have evolved and caught up with them. If they ever meet, I’m betting the first thing the former dog will say is, “What the hell were you two idiots thinking? I was a dog.”
