Need a Kidney? Win One on the The Big Donor Show
If you thought Survivor was suspenseful and rough on the contestants, you ain’t seen nothing yet. The Big Donor Show, a new Dutch reality TV show from the creators of Big Brother, gives new meaning to the word ’survivor’.

In the first episode, a 37 year-old terminally ill woman will select one out of three patients to receive her kidneys. She’ll base her decision on viewer advice and how well she likes the contestants after they answer some questions. The losers don’t get kicked off the island, they get to stay on dialysis and maybe even die. How cool is that? Kind of like combining Survivor with The Miss Universe Pageant and Jackass.
The producers of the show claim they’re doing this to bring awareness to the shocking lack of organ donors in the Netherlands. As it turns out, the Dutch people are willing to stick their fingers in dikes to save people, but aren’t willing to give up their body parts.
The Dutch donor authority has condemned the show. “The scenario portrayed in this programme is ethically totally unacceptable,” said Professor John Feehally. “The show will not further understanding of transplants,” he added. “Instead it will cause confusion and anxiety.”
Feehally also pointed out that typically the kidneys from an organ donor would go to two different recipients. Since we only need one kidney to live a healthy life, my biggest question is why the Hell don’t they have the woman pick two of the contestant? Sure, the odds of winning just doubled, but it would suck even more to be the only loser. After all, isn’t that what reality TV shows are about, laughing at the losers?
