Is Internet Porn Harmful or Just Good Clean Fun?
According to a recent study conducted by the Pew Research Center, 70% of Americans indicated that nude pictures and X-rated videos on the Internet DO NOT provide harmless entertainment for those who enjoy it.

I call bullshit. Unless Pew conducted the polls in churches on Sunday morning or only polled people that live in ultra conservative communities or polled only women (or men with their wives standing next to them), those results are ludicrous.
Since the wording used in the poll did not include the word ‘pornography’ (which many people automatically assume includes children), or XXX videos, I’m going to have to assume that it was understood that they weren’t talking about extreme or child porn, so I find it extremely hard to believe that 70% of Americans actually believe that looking at naked pictures or X-rated videos is harmful.
I venture to say that the vast majority of male Internet users in this country have looked at porn and of those men, I’m sure that the majority enjoyed it, so I’ve decided to conduct my own poll and make it very clear what you are voting on.
We are NOT talking about child porn.
We are NOT talking about extreme content such as rape, bestiality, violence or anything obviously illegal.
We ARE talking about photos and videos of consenting adults engaging in sexual activities.

While I have to agree that 70% sounds a bit exaggerated, Pew does collect information from a lot of different sorts of people (who own phones, so no hobos).
I think a poll on your site would indicate an exaggerated view in the opposite direction though, because, well, look at the sort of guy who would probably read your site. =P

I agree with Dr. Phil’s perspective on pornography.

This is directed towards men in a relationship though. Its hard for me to make my case on a non-religious level to the single man. But trust me, you could have a better life without it.

Jono - If everyone that voted in my poll was a regular reader of my blog, I’d agree with you, but the poll is also running on the Twiigs polling site on the society and culture page, which should give us a pretty fair cross section of the Internet using community. http://www.twiigs.com/recent/Society_&_Culture/300000
Chase - You think we’d have a better life with religion too, so I think we’re just going to have to disagree on this one, because I have a wonderful life.

no offense chase but porn has been around alot longer then doctor phil. While I agree that the man has his Phd and is trained I dont agree with. Remember that his daytime show is meant to be advice, not facts or true psychiatry, just plain advice from a texan. May I point out the word Texan to you? Go look up Texas laws regarding sex, porn, and toys.
Porn and the pursuit of sex in all forms has been one of our major drives since we became a species on this planet. Classic porn such as the Kama Sura is still in circualtion. I dont think theres anything wrong with a little porn.
I will continue to believe in my own view. porn is fun, porn can go too far, porn will always be a source of inspiration for my girfriend and I.
P.S. we read the kama sutra and laugh at cheesy flicks together.
P.S.S. We will never ever have sex to that horrible music.

Look at the Sistine Ceiling sometime. There’s plenty of porn. Like I am Rant pointed out, porn has been around since cavemen started drawing on walls. Sex is normal. Talking about sex is normal. Wanting to watch other people have sex is normal. I also agree that porn can and does frequently go too far, but for someone to base their answer to the question, “Is looking at porn harmfu?l” on the extreme or illegal stuff is no different than saying that drinking alcohol is harmful because some people over indulge. Most doctors will tell you that a drink or two a day is actually good for you and personally, I feel the same way about porn.

the internet is for pr0n. I mean, what did you do, the first day you had your internet connection, when you were alone in that dark room of yours? I can bet you typed in “big tits” or” porn” in google, just for kicks.
Anyway, that’ what I did.

Porn available to kids IS harmful to parents trying to manage porn’s exposure to their kids. Child controls are a joke! Kids are not fatally damaged by porn exposure, but exposure too soon is an unnecessary jolt to their innocence and libidos which they already have a struggle with keeping in check.
Porn does harm some marriages because the couples are not secure enough with their reality to not be threatened by the fantasy. It is valid to see it as a form of emotional cheating.
Porn, like other things, can manifest itself as an addiction. Addiction means that something is having negative effects on the balance and well being of one’s life.
Porn can be an Awesome Fantasy Trip for Open-minded, Secure, Well-adjusted and Mature Adults–men, women And couples!!!
I hope that is most of us : )

Good points, Karynna, especially the last one.
The parental controls that are available are actually quite good, if the parents actually use them. Google’s filter is nearly foolproof. I know, because after I set it on my kid’s computer, I actually tried searching for porn and couldn’t find any. Fortunately, I have no such filter on my computers.
The problem is not the lack or quality of the filters, but the lack of information available to the parents, or parent that just don’t care or are too lazy to look.
There are lots of things in this world that are dangerous for children. It’s the parent’s responsibility to supervise their kids. Children have no business using the Internet unsupervised any more than they should be left alone at the mall

My kids wont read pornography magazines so why should I let them watch pornography from the net?
But if I want to watch something XXX rated why shouldn’t I??????

Personally, I think just about everyone enjoys porn. I think that alot of people will not say they do, but they DO!!! I think the polls that say different are crap, and that they are misleading. So far this poll says that 87 persent enjoy it, and I think it is even higher than that. Who in there right mind does not like to look at a pretty naked woman. People who say they don’t like porn to some extent are full of bull. That is like saying they don’t like to eat.
Case closed, polls for the post part are crap
